Kidnap and Ransom insurance, also called K&R insurance, designed to reimburse you the loss suffered to you for the ransom money you paid in the event of kidnap. It does not pay the ransom directly to the kidnapper. In order to file for reimbursement, you actually must have the assets to pay the kidnapper first. Therefore, you can't purchase the Kidnap and Ransom insurance for an amount higher than your actual assets value. Also, you or your corporation must have the assets for at least $250,000, depending on who is purchasing the insurance to be eligible.
Even though Kidnap and Ransom insurance can be purchased for almost anywhere, it is the most useful where a kidnapping event is more likely to occur, such as: Mexico, Colombia, Nigeria, Haiti, some parts of Russia, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
Kidnap and Ransom insurance is underwritten by Lloyd's, that is rated A "Excellent" by A.M. Best.
Kidnap and Ransom insurance also provides the coverage for extortion, detention and hijacking. K&R insurance can be purchased by individuals, corporations, missionary groups, financial institutions as well as educational institutions.
In addition to providing the reimbursement of the ransom payment, the insurance also provides coverage for personal accidental, loss of ransom during delivery, private negotiator, public relations, travel expenses, psychiatric expenses, reward payments, financial losses in terms of: loss of income, rehabilitation benefit, funeral expenses, child care etc.
